An historic epic of California desert railroad construction and operations in the Rand Mining District of the Mojave Desert from 1897 to 1934. The railroad company was originally built by private investors from the East extending north to Johannesburg from a junction at Kramer station on the Santa Fe railroad, then known as the Atlantic & Pacific RR. Interestingly, the railroad never reached the town of Randsburg as implied in its corporate name. The line was ultimately purchased by the Santa Fe in 1903. Read about the discovery of gold on Rand Mountain, the immense tungsten deposits at Atolia, and the rich silver at Red Mountain; also includes material on the various stamp mills serving the area. Contains over 150 black & white photographs and illustrations including timetables, maps and station plats. 8.5”x11” color hardcover, 112 pages ISBN 0-88418-012-3
A ROAD TO RICHES: The Randsburg Railway Company and Mining District
The Rand Mining District straddles the border separating Kern and San Bernardino counties in California. The area on and around Rand Mountain is in the heart of the Mojave Desert and located nearly 10 miles north of Kramer station on the BNSF railroad; part of the original Santa Fe Route. The 1890s witnessed the first mining frenzy and by 1900 more than $3 million in gold had been extracted from the colorful mountain ranges. Other ore discoveries to the south included tungsten in 1905 and silver around 1919. Collectively, more than $50 million worth of ore has been extracted from the Rand Mining District.
